Happy Memorial Day

If I Knew

If I knew it would be the last time I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in tighter and pray the lord your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time that I'd see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss and come back for just one more.

If I knew it would be the last time I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise
I'd videotape each action and word, so I could play them back day by day.

If I knew it would be the last time I could spare an extra minute or two,
to stop and say "I love you"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day.
Well, I'm sure you'll have so many more, so I can just let this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance to make everything right.

There will always be another day to say our "I love you"
certainly there's another chance
to say "anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you and hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone young or old alike,
and today may be the last chance you get to hold your loved one tight.

Always hold them near, and take time to say "I'm sorry!"
"Please forgive me!" "Thank you!" "It's ok!" and if tomorrow never comes
you'll have no regrets about today.

I Will Always Remember You

You were born in California New York and Tennessee
You are every generations hope of all that we can be
All this land between the oceans
Is the home that you defend

You're my mother, you're my daughter
My sister, my friend
No one ever had to ask you
It seemed you always knew
Standing up for what is right
Is all that you could do.

Not one to look the other way
You chose to serve with pride
And dared to cross the boundaries
Knowing God was on your side

And I will always remember you
For you remembered me.

Always there when I needed you
Always there to keep me free.
How could I ever forget you
You, who always came through

For duty, honor, country
I will always remember you

How you taught us strength and courage
And the will to never fail
And that through our every conflict
Somehow triumph would prevail

You made your peace with history
And stand among the brave
No more the unsung hero
For you our banners wave

  1. Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful post. We should all give thanks for those that choose to protect our great country. I know I do. As a NavyMom I'm very proud and say a little prayer daily for those serving and a special thank you for those that have fallen.

  2. A lovely, heartfelt post. I am thankful for those who gave their lives upon the altar of freedom and grateful for those who follow their path today. As the proud mom of an Army captain who will lead his second command back to Afganistan in the fall, I pray for him and all the men and women under him. Dari
